FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL CHILDREN’S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH (NCDHM)

As I write the February postings for Practicon's website, I realize today is January 31, 2018. Tomorrow begins the month-long observance of National Children’s Dental Health Month, a 77 year old program created by dentists in the Cleveland, Ohio area to call attention to children's oral health. Begun as a one-day event on February 3, 1941, the American Dental Association expanded the event in 1949 so that it was celebrated nationwide. In 1955, the ADA increased the time to one week, and in 1981, this focus on children’s oral health was extended to one month.

The 2018 NCDHM uses the theme of Tooth Team, indicating there is teamwork between youngsters and adults who affect children's oral health. The cadre of adults comprises health care professionals and providers, children's care givers, including parents and others entrusted with their care, teachers, and social workers. Year after year, the focal point of the entire NCDHM is instruction to children and adults involved with children in the facets of good oral hygiene and nutritional disciplines that work together to assure a lifetime of oral health for young people.

The slogan for the 2018 NCDHM is "Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth for a healthy smile." The theme and slogan are highlighted in posters, activity sheets, puzzles, and other materials available from the ADA. Go to ADA.org/NCDHM to order materials for use in NCDHM activities. Additionally, you may choose to go a step further, distributing toothbrushes and other oral hygiene aids imprinted with your practice name throughout your community this month.
